Basic Principles:

Z-Olite consists of a unique mineral called "clinoptilolite " which is of volcanic origin. Z-Olite holds moisture and odors naturally and consistently. The material is a pale green sand-sized granular product. It is available in many mesh sizes, including, but not limited to, the following: -14+40, -8,+14, -8+40.

Z-Olite has multiple methods of holding fluids and odors including absorption and "adsorption".

The first is by absorbtion. Example: It will absorb up to 60 % of its weight in water or other liquids. Water, oil, and other liquids that are held in this position are loosely held and are water-soluble. This is the first big advantage; Z-Olite will absorb most liquids. In spill cleanup, the fluids can be contained and controled with application of Z-Olite. As a soil ammendment in sandy soils where the water permeates through the growth zone to the aquifer, it will hold the water in the growth zone longer. Water usage can be reduced 10-30%.
The second method is by "adsorption" or cation exchange (measured as cation exchange capacity or "CEC").
Z-Olite holds cations such as ammonium (NH₄⁺), ammonia (NH₃), potassium, calcium, and other particles within the mineral lattice where it is not water-soluble. This is why Z-Olite adsorbs odor so well. The smelly particles are literally bound to the Z-Olite.
Another application: In a yard/garden setting for example, the ammonium nitrogen (N) held in this position are plant accessible on a plant demand basis. The nitrogen in this position, for instance, will not burn the plant. This is the second big advantage. Z-Olite will hold ammonium fertilizers in the growth zone where they are plant accessible. This stops the leaching problem. Typically, 30 to 35 % of the nitrogen fertilizers leach directly to the water table where they cause pollution of the aquifer.

Generally a low-dust particle size is recommended such as 14 x 40 mesh.

USES:
Z-Olite is used to deodorize, clean, de-moisturize, and absorb fluids in the following areas:

LIVING, DINING, AND BED ROOMS: To deodorize carpets, mattresses, and upholstery.
KITCHEN: To deodorize refrigerators and freezers, food storage areas, trash storage containers, and to absorb spills on the floors or other areas.
BATHROOMS, LAUNDRY ROOMS, PANTRIES AND CLOSETS: To deodorize clothes hampers, diaper pails, wastebaskets, medicine cabinets, chemical storage areas, closets, suitcases, and to clean up floor spills. It is used as a desiccant.
BASEMENTS: To deodorize and absorb moisture.
GARDENS, POTTING SOILS, LAWNS, SCHRUBS, TREES, FLOWERS, FRUITS: Z-Olite is an excellent soil amendment.
SMOKING AREA: Breathable zeolite bags should be placed in the smoking area and zeolite should be placed in the ashtrays to minimize odors.
PET AREAS: To deodorize cat, dog, bird and other pet "spills." For litter boxes for pets.
FARM ANIMALS: To absorb moisture and deodorize horse stalls, pig pens, chicken coups, rabbit hutches, fishponds, aquariums, etc.
AIR CONDITIONING FILTERS: A breathable bag behind air filters will help deodorize.
GARAGES, DRIVEWAYS: For spill cleanup and deodorizing.
CARS, TRUCKS, BOATS, RV'S: For spill cleanup and deodorizing.
SEPTIC, SEWER, DRAINFIELD: A Z-Olite cover will deodorize flooded areas.

APPLICATION:
For spill cleanups Z-Olite is generally sprinkled on the spill and swept up. For deodorizing, Z-Olite is sprinkled on the contaminated area and cleaned up. Alternatively, Z-Olite can be brought into contact with the area in a breathable bag of cloth or plastic.

ADVANTAGES OF Z-Olite:

After use, Z-Olite can generally be applied to household lawns, compost piles, and gardens as a soil amendment.
Compared to other zeolites, Z-Olite has a very high cation exchange capacity (CEC), which increases its ability to hold ammonium and other compounds that create odor.
Z-Olite is generally a more effective deodorant than perfumes that are used to mask odors. This is because it binds to the ammonium (NH₄⁺) and ammonia (NH₃), thus trapping the odor.
